Ibiza Yacht Charter Guide 2025–2026

Ibiza by yacht is a completely different experience from Ibiza by hotel — the best beaches, the most dramatic anchorages (Es Vedrà, Cala d'Hort), and Formentera's extraordinary turquoise water are all accessible by tender from anchor. Spain's 21% IVA is the highest VAT in the Mediterranean with no offshore exemption, but for guests who want the Balearics experience, Ibiza remains unrivalled.

Ibiza charter highlights

Formentera — Ses Illetes

Best water in Europe · Caribbean quality

Formentera's north coast (Ses Illetes and Llevant beaches) has genuinely Caribbean-quality turquoise water — shallow, crystal-clear, and warm. The Posidonia seagrass meadows that give the water its clarity are EU-protected — mooring buoys must be used where provided, anchoring on seagrass is illegal and heavily fined. Arrive before 10am in July–August to secure a buoy. Worth prioritising above anything else in the Balearics.

Best anchor: Ses Illetes buoys, La Savina anchorage

Cala d'Hort / Es Vedrà

Iconic · Dramatic · Sunset anchorage

Es Vedrà is a 382m uninhabited rocky sea stack rising dramatically from the sea off southwest Ibiza — one of the most photographed yacht anchorages in the Mediterranean. Anchor in Cala d'Hort for sunset views of Es Vedrà turning pink and orange. Legend holds Es Vedrà has mystical properties (Atlantis, sirens depending on tradition). In any case, the view is extraordinary.

Best anchor: Cala d'Hort anchorage (sand/rock bottom)

Ibiza Town (Dalt Vila)

UNESCO old town · Nightlife access

The UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila (old town) sits on a hill behind the marina — fortified walls built by Charles V. Best approached by tender from anchor in Ibiza Bay. The marina itself is busy and expensive in July–August; anchor in the bay and tender in. Evening access to Ibiza Town's restaurants, sunset bars (Sunset Ashram, Kumharas), and clubs (when desired) is the yacht's core advantage over hotel guests.

Best anchor: Ibiza Bay, Botafoc anchorage (sheltered NE)

Ses Salines Natural Park

Pink flamingos · Protected beach · Snorkelling

The saltpans between Ibiza and Formentera are a protected natural park — pink flamingos are present year-round, along with ospreys and other waders. Ses Salines beach (Ibiza's finest) is accessible by tender. The seagrass meadows offshore offer excellent snorkelling. No anchoring in the protected zone — mooring buoys available seasonally.

Best anchor: Ses Salines designated mooring area

Ibiza charter — FAQ

How much does a yacht charter in Ibiza cost?

Ibiza charter rates: 35m motor yacht €30,000–€60,000/week; 45m motor yacht €60,000–€110,000/week; 55m motor yacht €110,000–€180,000/week. Spanish IVA (21%) applies with no commercial waters exemption — it is added in full on top of the base charter rate. This is one of the highest effective VAT burdens in the Mediterranean. On a €100,000/week charter, the IVA alone is €21,000. July–August rates are 30–50% above base rates for Ibiza. APA 30–33%, crew gratuity 10–15%.

What makes Ibiza good for yacht charters?

Ibiza is Europe's party capital — but the yacht charter experience goes beyond nightlife. The island has some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean (Ses Salines, Cala d'Hort, Cala Conta), and Formentera 4km south has crystalline Caribbean-quality turquoise water. The UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila (old town) is best approached by tender from anchor. Es Vedrà — a dramatic 382m sea stack rising off the southwest coast — is one of the most iconic yacht anchorages in Europe. The Balearics as a circuit (Ibiza → Formentera → Mallorca → Menorca) is one of the most popular two-week Mediterranean itineraries.

What is the best itinerary for an Ibiza yacht charter?

Day 1–2: Ibiza Town — anchor off Dalt Vila, evening at sunset bars. Day 2–3: Cala d'Hort — anchor with Es Vedrà rising from the water, swim, sunset cocktails. Day 3–4: Formentera — day at Illetes beach (Caribbean-quality turquoise water, 4nm from Ibiza). Day 4–5: Ses Salines Natural Park — salt flats, pink flamingos, Ses Salines beach. Day 5–7: Cala Conta and San Antoni area for sunset. Second week: head north to Mallorca (3–4 hours) for a change of scenery — Palma Bay, Tramontana mountains, Cala Deià.

What is the VAT situation for Ibiza charter?

Spain imposes 21% IVA (VAT) on all yacht charter fees with no commercial waters exemption — unlike Italy and France, there is no reduction for time spent in international waters. This is the highest effective VAT rate of any major Mediterranean destination. On a €150,000/week charter, the IVA is €31,500 — more than many guests pay for flights. If VAT is a primary concern, Croatia (0% VAT) or Montenegro (0% VAT) offer the same Adriatic cruising quality without the tax burden. Within the western Med, the Ibiza IVA is a fixed cost that must be budgeted.

What is Formentera and is it accessible by yacht?

Formentera is a small island 4nm south of Ibiza — arguably the finest beach destination in the Mediterranean. The water at Ses Illetes and La Savina lagoon is Caribbean-turquoise, shallow (1–2m), and extraordinarily clear due to Posidonia seagrass filtering. Most Ibiza charter itineraries include 1–2 nights anchored off Formentera's north coast. Anchoring in Posidonia is prohibited (EU law, heavy fines) — use buoys where provided. The island has no airport; day-trippers come by ferry, making charter the best way to experience Formentera properly.

When is the best time to charter in Ibiza?

June and September: the best months — warm (28–32°C), calm waters, Formentera accessible, fewer crowds than peak season, 20–30% lower rates. July–August: peak season, highest rates, busiest anchorages, best energy and nightlife access from the water. Ibiza in August is an experience unlike anywhere else — but budgets accordingly. May: shoulder season, cooler (22–26°C), best value. October: end of season, many charter yachts repositioning. The Tramontane wind can bring strong NW gusts in shoulder seasons — your captain will advise on itinerary adjustments.
