What to know about Greek Islands.

Six thousand islands. A hundred and seventy of them inhabited. Twelve hours of light, calm seas, anchorages that haven't changed in eighty years.

Greece yacht charters cost €15,000–€350,000 per week depending on size. Season runs May–October. Best islands: Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu, Sporades. Budget 30% of base rate for APA.

The Greek Islands are arguably the most rewarding cruising ground in the Mediterranean. Six thousand islands and islets, only a hundred and seventy inhabited; rates competitive with the Côte d'Azur for a noticeably less crowded experience; a charter season that runs cleanly from May through October with peak in July and August.

The four cruising regions

The Cyclades

Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos. Iconic whitewashed-and-blue scenery, lively nightlife, and the most photographed anchorages in Greece. Strong meltemi winds in July–August make for excellent sailing but can disrupt itineraries — a competent captain is essential.

The Ionian

Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos. Calmer waters, lush green landscapes, fewer crowds. Better for first-time charterers and families. The shoulder season (May, October) is particularly lovely.

The Dodecanese

Rhodes, Kos, Patmos, Symi. Closer to the Turkish coast, with beautifully preserved medieval and Ottoman architecture. The desk's favourite for couples and small groups who want history alongside the swimming.

The Sporades

Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos. The least-trafficked of the four regions, with the National Marine Park of Alonissos protecting some of the cleanest water in the Mediterranean. Smaller marinas — best done with a yacht under 50m.

What it costs, all-in

For a typical 50m motor yacht charter in Greece during August: base rate €100,000/wk, plus APA €30,000 (provisioning, fuel, port fees), plus crew gratuity €10,000–€15,000. Total all-in: roughly €140,000–€145,000. Mid-shoulder (June, September) typically saves 15–25%.

The desk's usual itinerary — Athens to Symi

Step aboard at Flisvos Marina, Athens. Crew dinner aboard. A short hop south to Sounion for the night. Two nights in Mykonos (arrive late, leave at noon — the partying isn't why you're here). Two nights in Santorini, anchored under the caldera. Two nights in Astypalaia, the desk's secret — a whitewashed castle and an empty harbour. Three nights in Symi, dinner at Lefteris, the tender ashore at dusk.

Frequently asked.

What is the best time to charter a yacht in Greece?

The Greek charter season runs May through October. July and August are peak months with guaranteed sunshine but higher rates and fuller marinas. May–June and September–October offer better value, calmer winds in some areas, and fewer crowds — ideal for a first charter.

How much does a yacht charter in Greece cost?

Greece yacht charter rates range from €15,000 per week for a 30m sailing yacht to €350,000 per week for a 70m+ motor yacht. Mid-range (45–55m motor yacht) typically runs €80,000–€150,000 per week plus APA of 30–35%.

Do I need a licence to charter a yacht in Greece?

No. On a crewed charter you hire the yacht with a professional captain and crew. You do not need any sailing qualification. The captain handles all navigation, customs, and port administration.

Which Greek islands are best for a superyacht charter?

The Cyclades (Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos) offer iconic scenery and lively nightlife. The Ionian Islands (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia) have greener landscapes and calmer waters. The Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos, Patmos) combine history with excellent anchorages. The Sporades offer unspoilt nature with fewer crowds.

Is VAT charged on Greece yacht charters?

Greek VAT (currently 12%) applies to charters embarking in Greek waters unless the yacht spends more than 50% of its charter time in international waters. The desk handles the tax documentation. APA expenditure is VAT-exempt.

What is the minimum charter duration in Greece?

Most yachts are offered on a 7-night minimum in peak season. Some operators accept shorter charters (3–5 nights) in shoulder season, typically with a premium.
